Salzburg
(0 kms)
In the morning we packed the bikes. Konrad
and I had the pipe lagging that we'd carried around for the fortnight, so
we were looking for something for Francesco. As we'd returned to the
hotel the previous evening, we'd seen mountains of cardboard boxes across
the street. One of those would do just fine. Unfortunately, at
about 6am, the bin men arrived and took them all! So, after
fluttering his eyelashes at the receptionist, on of the chamber maids
emptied a box of toilet rolls and gave him that. I must say I was
sceptical as to whether that would be enough cardboard, but he made very
smart use of it. We'd asked where we could pack the bikes and were
shown into a bar in the hotel. I had visions of big oily marks on
the carpet etc, but we were very careful.
After that, it was off in tourist mode around
Salzburg - in the rain :-( I can't say
that I'm too enamoured with Salzburg. I've visited once before and it
just doesn't seem to live up to expectations for me. Don't get me
wrong, it's a nice place, but there just seems to be something missing for
me. All the interesting bits seem quite small. I certainly wouldn't
like to spend more than a couple of days there. (All the Mozart lovers
will now flame me no doubt ;-) I don't suppose it helped that we
nipped into a cafe to be served by a waitress who was obviously in the
wrong job (hated people), or needed a personality transplant - take your
pick.
But! We did have an excellent meal in the
town that night, unfortunately I can't remember the name of the place
(just up on the right from the Funicular railway that takes you up to the
castle), and the waiter was very friendly. It was a big barn of a
place inside (something to do with a brewery) that didn't look
particularly inviting, but the food was very good.
